NDIS Funding for Assistive Technology
Ability Ease is proudly an NDIS registered provider.

This means we can be engaged by NDIS participants and support organisations to supply assistive technology and related services, while upholding the NDIS Code of Conduct and our own internal values.
We work with participants across Melbourne and beyond to make the process of selecting, trialling, and purchasing equipment as clear and supportive as possible.

What Is NDIS Assistive Technology (AT) Funding?
NDIS Assistive Technology (AT) funding is a dedicated part of an NDIS plan that helps people access equipment, devices, or technology to support independence, safety, and meaningful life goals.
Assistive Technology funding is typically linked to a participant’s functional needs and is considered reasonable and necessary under the NDIS.
NDIS Assistive Technology is grouped into four levels:
-
Level 1 – Low risk, low cost (under $1,500):
Simple items that generally do not require formal assessments.
Examples: walking sticks, raised toilet seats. -
Level 2 – Low cost with advice:
Slightly more tailored equipment that may require guidance.
Examples: wheelchairs, bath boards. -
Level 3 – Moderate complexity:
Requires an assessment from an allied health professional such as an Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist.
Examples: customised seating, specialised beds. -
Level 4 – High complexity:
Highly specialised equipment that often requires multiple assessments and trials.
Examples: power wheelchairs, environmental control units.

How Assistive Technology Funding Works at Ability Ease
All equipment available at Ability Ease can be funded through the NDIS Assistive Technology budget, provided it meets the reasonable and necessary criteria.
We work directly with:
- NDIS participants
- Support coordinators
- Plan managers
- Allied health professionals
This collaborative approach ensures the correct equipment is selected and correctly claimed under the participant’s NDIS plan.
Equipment is typically recommended following an assessment by a Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist, or Exercise Physiologist and is linked to the participant’s clinical needs and stated goals.
For example, a participant may require a lightweight wheelchair that can be easily transported to support community access, if that is one of their NDIS goals.

Submitting Evidence to the NDIS
If you are self-managed or agency-managed, you will usually need an assessment from an allied health professional in your region.
This assessment typically includes:
- Evidence explaining why the item is reasonable and necessary
- Professional recommendations
- Consideration of your home, lifestyle, and daily activities
The assessment report, together with a quote from Ability Ease, is submitted to the NDIS for approval.
If you are self-managed, you may submit this independently. If you are agency-managed, your provider will usually handle this process for you.
Our office is always available to provide guidance and answer questions along the way.

What If There Isn’t Enough Funding in the Current Plan?
NDIS plans are generally issued for 12, 24, or 36 months.
If a participant does not have enough funding to purchase essential assistive technology, an early plan review may be recommended.
Requesting a Change of Circumstances
A Change of Circumstances request can be submitted if:
- The participant’s needs have changed
- There is increased urgency for essential equipment
- The current budget does not reflect clinical requirements
This process can help ensure participants receive the equipment they need in a timely manner.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Ability Ease list the AT category on quotes?
No. Our quotes list the item and price, but do not label equipment as “low-cost” or “high-cost.”

How long does delivery take after approval?
- In-stock items: Often same-day or very prompt delivery
- Supplier-ordered items: Usually up to 10 business days
- Custom items: May take several weeks depending on manufacturer timelines
Do I have to buy from Ability Ease?
No. We support choice and control and encourage participants to compare options to ensure the best value.
